A bicycle ride is an excellent way to enjoy fresh air, sunshine, and beautiful scenery while exercising. However, if you're planning more than a cruise around the block, you’ll need a few items for the ride. Below are several essentials you should have to ensure the ride is safe and comfortable.

What to Pack for a Cycling Excursion

1. Bicycle Repair Tools

Every bicyclist should have a basic emergency kit for long rides. Flat tires, loose chains, or stuck gears can ruin the day and strand you on a trail. However, with a small emergency kit that fits under the seat, you can fix the problem quickly and continue the ride. Ideally, your package should include a folding multi-tool, small pump, tire levers, spare tire tube, and patch kit. Remember to replace any items if you use them during a ride so that you have them on your next outing.

2. First Aid Kit

A first aid kit is a necessity for bicycle rides. Applying basic medical care to cuts and scrapes while you’re on the trail can prevent severe infections and blood loss. At a minimum, carry adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, and antibiotic ointment to take care of minor injuries. You should also familiarize yourself with the proper techniques to apply these items effectively.

3. Identification & Cash

bicycleCarry personal identification with you on your rides in case of an emergency. Slip a credit card and cash into your pack as well. You can pick up a drink and snacks at a shop along the way, or pay for a ride back to your car if something happens to your bicycle. Carrying these items prepares you for any unforeseen events, and ensures you remain as safe as possible.

4. Snacks

Bicycling takes considerable energy—especially on long summer trips—and you’ll want a snack along the way. Pack a light, protein-packed snack to keep you going out on the road, such as trail mix or protein bars. A water bottle is also necessary, as it allows you to stay hydrated on a long ride. Don’t forget a water bottle during colder weather, either, as you will still sweat and exert energy.
