While there are many different kinds of cooling systems, central air conditioning consists of an outdoor unit, ductwork, and various other parts. The exterior part is its condenser. It houses the refrigerant your system needs to cool the air and helps release heat outside. However, because it is exposed to nature and the elements, it needs routine maintenance and care to avoid unnecessary AC repairs

3 Ways to Maintain Your AC Condenser

1. Keep It Clear of Yard Debris

The outside unit of your air-conditioning system also contains a fan, motor, and other components that all work together to cool your home.

Cut your grass so that it doesn’t grow to block the unit’s vents. Don’t plant flowers within six feet of the machine to keep dust, dirt, and plant life out of the inner workings. Debris can build up inside the machine and interfere with its lubrication, clog cooling fins, loosen connections, and restrict airflow.

2. Inspect It Annually

ac-repairs-daytonA professional technician should open and inspect your outdoor unit at least once a year as part of routine maintenance. They will check the refrigerant levels in your unit and they can also test your unit to make sure the condensation drain lines are free of blockages, helping you spot potential problems before they cause the unit to stop working. The blower fan filter also needs to be replaced every year and the cooling fins cleaned.

3. Change All Filters

Part of caring for your outdoor unit involves maintaining the rest of your HVAC system, too. Change indoor air filters as recommended by your unit’s manufacturer to prevent restricted airflow. When airflow is impeded, it can make your outdoor condenser work harder to compensate, putting the blower fan and motor at risk for unnecessary wear and tear and AC repairs.
