Apple® products are well known for their simple and smooth user experience, but like all electronic devices, as they age, they begin to slow down, operating less efficiently than they once did. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to speed up older iPhones®. Learn how in the guide below.

How to Speed Up an Older iPhone®

1. Update iOS

One of the easiest ways to speed up an older Apple® product is by updating the iOS. Apple® regularly introduces newer versions of its proprietary software not only to provide new features but also to optimize the overall performance and security of your device.

You can easily update your operating system through your phone's "General" settings by selecting "Software Update." Your phone will prompt you to "Download & Install" if an update is available.

2. Free Up Space

Cached data, video files, and old text messages can be drains on your phone, causing it to run slower and less efficiently than it should. To prevent this, delete anything you don't need. Store images and videos on the Cloud and update your text settings to delete messages after 30 days.

3. Turn Off Background App Refresh

Many popular apps, such as news feeds and social media sites, are designed to re-sync continuously in the background to provide you with up-to-the-minute information. While convenient, these apps place a considerable burden on your phone's battery life, in addition to slowing down its system.

Reduce constant refreshing by turning off Background App Refresh in your settings or turn it off for selected apps within their settings. You can then manually refresh these apps when you open them.
