Brunch is a common fixture in weekend plans, whether it’s to celebrate a special occasion or just get together with friends for good food and drinks. This luxurious meal between breakfast and lunch, though it only recently exploded in popularity, has been around for a long time. Before you host or attend your own brunch, know how it got its start and which dishes you can use to keep the tradition going.

The Story of Sunday Brunch

Its Beginnings

There is no clear origin behind this meal. Some believe it started with the hunt breakfasts of England, which featured a large feast laid out for those participating in the hunt. Common dishes included eggs, meats, fruits, sweets, and stews. Others believe the Catholics started it, sitting down for a large meal together on Sundays after they fasted before mass.

The first use of the word “brunch,” however, was in 1895. Guy Beringer wrote an article in Hunter’s Weekly called “Brunch: A Plea.” His article discussed the benefits of enjoying a larger meal earlier in the day rather than a typical Sunday dinner.

A Boom in Popularity

brunchBy the early 1920s, the idea had spread to the United States. Hotels often hosted brunches since restaurants were closed on Sundays. People wanted a meal earlier in the day, but wanted to be able to sleep in. A meal that started around 10 or 11 was perfect. As demand rose, restaurants began staying open for Sunday groups as well.

The unique timing means that a brunch menu can host both breakfast and lunch foods. People typically lean towards breakfast foods, however. Popular dishes to enjoy include waffles, French toast, bacon and eggs, and more. You can enjoy coffee or juice on the side. If you want alcohol, popular drinks are Bloody Marys and mimosas.
