When you move, you may need to wrap and pack a range of items. Bicycles, which have irregular shapes, require some preparation and packing materials to stay protected. This guide helps you get your bike disassembled and wrapped to prepare for transportation.

How to Prepare a Bike for Shipping

1. Unscrew the Pedals & Rear Derailleur

Use a wrench or hex key to unscrew the pedals from the crank arms. Turn the nuts and bolts on the rear derailleur, which is the component you use to shift gears, to remove it as well. Wrap both parts in packing materials, such as bubble wrap, to keep them safe.

2. Remove or Shift the Handlebar

Use an Allen wrench to loosen the handlebar stem from its housing. While some people prefer to remove the handlebars altogether, you can shift them down to align them with the bike frame. When using packing materials, wrap the bar securely around the frame.

3. Wrap the Seat & Front Wheel

If your bike doesn’t have a latch, a 15-millimeter wrench is usually right for unscrewing the wheel from the frame. Loosen the brakes before attempting to remove the wheel.

4. Cover the Frame

Once you have everything removed, it’s time to wrap the frame. Use foam insulation to protect the bars throughout the bike. Wrap the rear wheel and its components with thick layers of bubble wrap to cover any sharp ends. Source large or custom boxes to fit your bike.
