CrossFit® is a popular style of workout because it helps people build strength and endurance quickly. However, hard exercise requires proper fuel, so it’s important to consume a diet that gives your body the nutrients it needs. The guide below offers tips on how to plan your meals.

How to Eat Healthy While Doing CrossFit

1. Prioritize Protein

Protein is the main building block for muscles, so those who are working to build more strength need even more protein in their diet than other healthy adults. While others should get between 15 and 25 percent of their daily calories from protein, CrossFit athletes may want to shoot for up to 30 percent.

However, to reduce strain on your kidneys—which filter waste from your body and have a hard time with meat products—try to spread out that protein intake throughout the day, and get it from a variety of healthy foods like fish, legumes, and nuts.

2. Replace Carbs After Workouts

As you expend energy during a workout, your body burns carbohydrates. Replacing these nutrients shortly afterward—ideally within 30 minutes—can help your muscles recover and provide the energy your body needs for the rest of the day. For convenience, bring bananas or a container of berries with you to snack on after you finish your routine.

3. Eat Balanced Meals

crossfitVitamins and minerals are also essential for post-workout recovery and overall health. Especially important among these are Vitamin C (found in citrus fruits, red and green peppers, broccoli, and Brussel sprouts) and Vitamin D (found in some types of fish, egg yolk, and mushrooms). You also need iron (in liver, spinach, and some meat products), calcium (from dairy), and magnesium (appearing in nuts and seeds). Though there are supplements available, getting nutrients from food can help your body better absorb them.
