The plantar fascia is a bowstring ligament that runs across the bottom of the foot, connecting the heel bone to the toes. It supports the arch of the foot and absorbs shock when walking. Runners tend to repeatedly stretch and tear this ligament, causing it to become irritated. The athlete may feel stabbing pain on the bottom of the foot near the heel.

Make sure to wear shoes that fit you correctly and allow you to do the activity properly. Also, have multiple pairs you can rotate between to ensure they last longer. However, when a pair develops a worn sole or midsole or starts to smell, replace them with new ones.

Whether practicing, exercising, or playing your sport, always wear moisture-wicking socks to keep your feet dry. If you are prone to sweating, carry multiple pairs to avoid fungal infections and blisters.

At the start of the season, ease into your training program to avoid overusing the muscles and ligaments in your feet. Slowly increase intensity and build your endurance and strength in the area by cross-training in other sports.
