Trouble with the exhaust system is one of the most common reasons for auto service. The muffler and other components are beneath the car, so they're vulnerable to damage from road debris, potholes, and curbs. Here are a few signs you need exhaust repair.

How to Tell if You Need Exhaust Repair

1. Excess Engine Noise

Engines operate through a series of tiny explosions, so they create a lot of noise. The muffler is composed of a series of pipes and chambers designed to reflect sound so that the waves cancel each other out.

If the exhaust system has an upstream leak or a faulty muffler, the sound will escape without dampening. If your car suddenly makes a roaring noise instead of a purr when you step on the pedal, you likely need exhaust repair.

2. Smell of Gas or Smoke

Auto serviceThe exhaust system transports emissions residue from the engine compartment at the front of the vehicle to the exhaust pipe below the rear bumper. If everything is working as it should, you should not be able to smell gas or smoke inside the vehicle.

If part of the exhaust system has failed, you may notice the odor of gasoline or burning fuel, or you may see smoke rising from the floorboards. If this occurs, contact an auto service professional immediately. Car exhaust contains carbon monoxide, which is toxic if inhaled.

3. Scraping Sounds From Beneath the Car

The muffler, pipes, and other exhaust components hang from beneath the car on secure hangers. However, if you can hear the sound of metal scraping on concrete while driving, it likely means that a hanger has failed and a component is dangling. This requires immediate attention, since the metal piece could fall off and endanger other motorists.
