Diseases, surgeries, and other health-related factors can leave patients in immunocompromised states. When someone’s immune system is weak, they may develop life-threatening infections if they aren’t in a safe, clean environment. If you’re preparing your home for an immunocompromised loved one, consult with your HVAC contractor and follow these tips before they arrive.

How to Create a Safe Home for an Immunocompromised Patient

1. Vacuum

Many dangerous contaminants can be hiding in your carpeting. Mold spores, pet dander, dirt, lead, and other particles can have adverse health effects on patients with cancer or individuals recovering from transplant surgery. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter to capture fine particles, and try to keep your loved one in areas with hardwood or tile flooring until they recover.

2. Limit Contact

Young children may be more likely to carry the cold or flu, and other family members may bring harmful bacteria or viruses into your home. Visitors should keep their distance until your loved one’s immune system has recovered.

This also applies to pets, as they can carry allergens and other contaminants in their fur. You should wear a face mask and gloves whenever you help the patient so you don’t transmit any bacteria.

3. Install HEPA Air Filters

They’re designed to capture the smallest particles and improve the air quality in your home. If you anticipate an extended recovery period for the patient, talk to an HVAC contractor about how often you should replace the filters.

4. Keep Surfaces Clean

Dust particles can cause life-threatening respiratory reactions, so wipe down all of the surfaces before your loved one returns from the hospital. You should continue wiping these materials down with a non-toxic cleaner that won’t irritate vulnerable senses.

A DIY solution is often all you need. Combine 1 cup of distilled white vinegar, 1 cup of water, and a drop of dishwashing soap, and clean surfaces as needed.
