Homeowners install fences to keep pets safe, restrict pool access, and turn away unwanted visitors. Although these boundaries are durable, they need to be taken care of to ensure their effectiveness. Here’s how you can clean and maintain your fence so that it lasts for years.

Cleaning

Keep debris off your fence to help it look presentable. Wind-borne leaves, grass blades, twigs, seeds, wrappers, and other detritus can collect between the links or slats. While you can remove most of the debris with a leaf-blower, stubborn remnants will likely need to be taken off by hand. This task should be performed every month or as needed if you see buildup accumulating.

fenceYou should also rinse your fence with a power washer to get rid of dirt and stubborn grime. Use a stiff-bristled brush to address caked-on mud or algae stains. Apply warm soapy water, and let the solution sit on the fence for several minutes before rinsing it off with a garden hose or power washer.

Maintenance

If your fence has rust, use steel wool or 80-grit sandpaper to scour off the corrosion—you may need to use a rotary Dremel® tool for stubborn patches. Apply a solution of white vinegar and water as you work to help dissolve the rust and facilitate its removal.

Apply a coat of rust-preventing paint once you’ve addressed all traces of corrosion. Paint thoroughly over the newly sanded areas to ensure they’re coated sufficiently. You should also paint the bottom four inches of the fence to protect this area from damage from grass edgers, weed-whackers, and other lawn equipment.

While diligent maintenance will maximize your fence’s life span, the boundary will eventually need to be replaced.
