Hurricane season in Hawaii runs from May 15 to November 30. Since it has already begun, you may be concerned about when the next storm will hit. From reviewing your insurance plan to patching up weak areas on the roof, you need to prepare in many ways. Here are four tips to help you get ready.

4 Hurricane Preparation Tips

1. Review Insurance Documents

While most people think homeowners insurance is sufficient, many policies exclude flood and hurricane damage. Before any damage is done, review your plan to make sure you’re covered.

Also, review your policy limits and adjust them based on the value of your home. Calculate the value of the items inside your home as well in case you need to file a claim later.

2. Inspect Your Home

With winds between 74 and 157 miles per hour, a hurricane can do serious exterior damage. Repairing the roof as well as boarding up windows and sliding glass doors will make your home less vulnerable. If there are large trees near your property, remove any dead branches to avoid having them fall on your home.

3. Stock Up on Supplies

InsuranceRight before a natural disaster hits, stores may get sold out of essential items, so it’s smart to buy them in advance. Also, get supplies in case electricity, water, and gas aren’t available. The most helpful items to buy include batteries, matches, first aid kits, candles, bottled water, and canned food.

4. Plan Your Evacuation

In case you have to leave your home before or during a hurricane, have an evacuation plan for your family. Mapping out the locations of nearby shelters will help you stay organized during the disaster. If you have pets, find shelters that allow animals.
