Chemotherapy is a common treatment for fighting cancer, but it does have possible side effects. While it may cause fatigue, hair loss, nausea, and dry mouth, you can take to manage these symptoms and stay healthy. Below are several strategies to take care of your body and mind as you begin treatment.

5 Tips for Maintaining Your Strength During Chemotherapy

1. Engage in Physical Activity

You might feel tired, but you should keep up with physical activity. Even light exercise like daily walks, yard work, and cleaning the house has benefits. Regular exercise can help reduce your risk of falls, improve blood flow, lower your risk of osteoporosis, reduce nausea and fatigue, and improve your quality of life. However, ask your oncologist if it is safe for you to work out.

2. Avoid Infections

Chemotherapy impacts your immune system and hinders the body’s ability to fight infections. To keep yourself safe, avoid contact with people who are sick. Don’t share cups, food, or personal items with others. Stay away from large crowds where viruses can spread quickly. Wash your hands with soap and water frequently, and disinfect shared surfaces often.

3. Eat a Balanced Diet

Maintaining a diet rich in chemotherapyessential nutrients will help keep your body strong during chemotherapy, and each nutrient plays a different role. For example, zinc supports the immune system, B vitamins are key in rebuilding body tissue, and folic acid assists in the formation of red blood cells. Try to balance these nutrients every day with fruits, vegetables, proteins, and healthy fats. Remember to drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.

4. Rest Often

Fatigue is a common side effect of chemotherapy, so give your body what it needs—rest. After treatment, take activities slow and relax. Engage in a quiet hobby, play board games with family, or watch feel-good movies. Take short naps during the day when necessary, and be sure to get 7-9 hours of sleep every night.

5. Find Emotional Support

The emotional side effects of treatment are as significant as the physical. You are likely going through a whirlwind of emotions, so find support on your journey. This can come through groups of people sharing your experience or from a mental health professional who specializes in patients with cancer. Ask your cancer care team for recommendations.
