Vinyl siding has become a popular choice for homeowners due to its durability and affordability. Unfortunately, it’s still susceptible to dirt, mold, bird droppings, rust, and pollen. But with the right pressure washer and cleaning detergents, you can achieve professional-looking results. Here’s what you should know about washing your vinyl siding.

How To Keep Your Vinyl Siding Clean

1. Choose the Right Cleaners

From homemade detergents to store-bought cleaners, there are a variety of cleaning solutions you can use to wash your siding. One do-it-yourself solution uses a ratio of 70% water and 30% white vinegar. You can also try mixing 1 cup of oxygen bleach with 1 gallon of water to help scrub away mold and mildew.

Stains, grease, and excessively dirty spots can be tackled with a household cleaner such as Lysol® or Murphy® Oil Soap. You can also purchase a commercial cleaner specifically made for vinyl from a hardware store.

Not all solutions are appropriate for vinyl and can corrode and damage the material. Avoid liquid grease removers and cleaners that contain organic solvents. Do not apply undiluted bleach to your siding.

2. Wash by Hand

Cleaning should be performed every two years. When washing your siding by hand, use a soft cloth or a soft-bristled brush. To prevent streaking, wash from the bottom up. Never use steel wool or abrasive sponges to tackle tough stains because they can damage the siding.

3. Use a Pressure Washer

Pressure WasherUnless the vinyl’s manufacturer specifically warns against power washing, using a pressure washer to clean your siding gets the job done quickly and effectively. You can rent a washer and do the job yourself or hire a trusted professional. If you decide to rent a washer, read the instructions to determine the cleaner you’ve chosen is safe for the model.

Before washing, prep the area and cover all brick facing, vents, outlets, and light fixtures to protect against runoff. Close any open windows and cover nearby plants.

Use the power washer to apply cleaning detergent, working your way along the exterior in small sections. Hold the stream at eye level and avoid pointing the flow upward to prevent water from getting under the siding. Once the detergent has been applied, let it sit for a few minutes and follow up with a thorough rinsing. After rinsing, let the vinyl air dry.
