Dermal fillers and Botox® are both injectable cosmetic treatments designed to reduce signs of aging. Those similarities often cause people to confuse the two options or mistakenly think they’re interchangeable. However, there are some key differences. To choose the treatment that’s best for your needs, learn about what each entails.

Dermal Fillers

Fillers involve injecting compounds like calcium hydroxylapatite and hyaluronic acid into the face. These materials sit underneath the skin to essentially fill in empty space that leads to wrinkles or sagging.

Dermal fillers can address a variety of skin issues, like smoothing wrinkles around the mouth and eyes, plumping lips, softening the look of recessed scars, and filling in shallow parts of the face. The effects of this treatment usually last for six months to two years.

Botox

dermal fillersBotox is the common name for an injection that features botulinum toxin, which is produced by a type of bacteria that blocks muscle nerves. This toxin essentially freezes facial muscles to soften and slow the progression of wrinkles.

It’s especially effective on wrinkles that occur due to repeated muscle movement, like smile and frown lines around the mouth and crow’s feet around the eyes. It can also benefit those who experience migraines or TMJ pain. Many patients see the best results when they receive treatments every three or four months.
