Whether you just bought a new home, lost a set of keys, or are looking to improve the property’s security, many homeowners face a time when they need to either rekey or replace their door locks. While these are similar services that a locksmith can perform, they also have key differences. That’s why locksmiths recommend understanding which is better for your lock installations.

Rekeying

Door locks work by matching the inner springs and pins to the unique shape of your key. When you put the key into the hole, it moves the springs and pins so that the lock can be turned. They’re fashioned in a way that other keys can’t do this.

When you rekey door locks, you won’t have to replace the entire installation. Instead, the locksmith will simply rearrange these working parts inside of the lock cylinder to the point where the old key no longer works.

Then, a new key will be fitted to match the rearranged springs and pins and a new set will be provided to you. It’s typically more cost-effective than replacing them outright, and it’s recommended if you’ve lost your keys or bought a home where the previous owner might still have the keys.

Lock Replacement

Door LocksWhile rekeying involves exchanging the keys for a new set, this option replaces the entire lock on your door. The locksmith has to physically remove the entire lock from the door by unscrewing it and removing both the mechanism and deadbolt.

Once the old one is out, a new one will be fitted to the door installation. Like rekeying, you will need to get a new set of keys to fit the lock. While this service is more expensive than rekeying, it does provide additional benefits. Security experts recommend doing this if the lock has been damaged for any reason, if it’s getting old and rusting, or if you simply want to upgrade to a better one.

When you replace the lock, you’re able to get one that is stronger and more secure. You can also incorporate smart home features that give you remote access to the lock and a camera to see who is at your door.
