Granite countertops are popular for their unique character and varied color patterns. Because the material is naturally porous, it needs to be correctly cared for to keep stains and bacteria from sinking into the food prep surface. The right cleaning methods will also help keep it from being damaged. Here's what you need to know about your stone counter to keep it pristine.

Daily Care

1. Cleaning

When you clean your granite countertop, you should never use abrasive cleaners or tools. These will scratch the surface and create hiding places for bacteria. You should also never use products containing bleach, vinegar, or ammonia, which can etch the surface.

Instead, use a paper towel or a lint-free cloth to apply water and a small amount of dishwashing detergent. You can also use special granite cleaners, but this isn't strictly necessary on a daily basis; instead, you can use them as seldom as once a week for a deep cleaning.

2. Heat

granite countertopsLike many hard materials, granite is vulnerable to extreme temperature changes. Setting hot items from the oven or stove on the counter can crack the stone. When you're handling hot items, use a trivet to separate the dish and the countertop.

3. Spills

The longer a spill stays on the countertop, the more likely it is to stain or etch the stone. Clean up messes as soon as they're made to avoid this problem.

Blot liquids rather than wiping them to help keep the mess limited to one area. Soak up as much of the spill as you can with a paper towel or lint-free cloth, then apply granite cleaner following the directions on the bottle.

Long Term Care

A granite countertop's seal wears out over time and needs to be reapplied at least twice a year. Darker granite is less porous, so lighter countertops need more frequent sealing.

If you're in doubt, or if you see signs of wear, apply another coat; there's no downside to sealing too often. Instructions for each sealing product are listed on the container.
