Whether you own a new puppy or have had your dog for years, it’s possible to teach your pet to enjoy grooming. Their baths can be an excellent time to bond with your four-legged friend after teaching them to enjoy the experience with some simple dog training methods.

3 Dog Training Tips for Bath Time

1. Start When They’re Young

dog-training-ohioSometimes it is easier to train a puppy than an adult dog. Puppies need patience, and it might take a few tries to get the response you want. Introduce your young dog to baths by playing with him in an empty tub or sink a few times before adding dog shampoo and water. He should be comfortable in the bathtub before you give him his first bath. Give him plenty of treats and praise, especially if he seems fearful while bathing.

2. Keep Your Energy Positive

Dogs can sense our emotions. If you’re anxious or nervous about bathing your pet, they can pick up on your apprehension, which might feed their own. Stay calm and think positively but be assertive. Think of ways to make your dog’s bath time fun, such as using their favorite chew toy to keep them entertained. This can help your dog associate bath time with playtime.

3. Make Sure They’re Comfortable

Fill the tub or sink with warm water and place a nonslip bathmat or towel in the bottom of the tub to help your pooch stand without sliding during his bath. If your dog seems uneasy, try using diffused essential oils designed to help dogs feel less anxious. As soon as he’s out of the tub, wrap him in a towel to help him stay warm while you dry him.
