A new manicure can make you look glamorous and professional. After a trip to the day spa, you want to make those results last as long as possible. Here are some care tips to help you keep your nails looking flawless.

Do:

Consider your lifestyle.

Long, artistically shaped nails are a fun fashion statement, but they don't mesh with an active lifestyle. If you play sports or work with your hands, opt for a shorter style. Your nails are less likely to break off this way.

Use products.

manicureFirst, make sure you have the same color of nail polish your salon used so that you can apply touch-ups. A clear topcoat also protects and strengthens the color underneath and is easier to repair than your nail art.

Reapply the topcoat every two days to keep the manicure pristine. Also apply cuticle oil daily to keep your cuticles looking healthy while strengthening the nail itself.

Don't:

Rush it.

After your nails are dry, the polish still hasn't completely set. That process takes up to twelve hours after the manicure. During that time, use your hands as little as possible to avoid damaging the new polish. Try to schedule a manicure on a day when you have few other plans.

Let it soak.

Water and heat can expand and soften your fingernails, but not the polish on top of them, causing it to come loose. When you get the manicure, ask for a dry treatment; don't soak your hands in water.

Afterward, avoid hot baths. When you're doing chores such as washing dishes, wear gloves to keep your hands dry.
