Dealing with a sweltering summer is always a challenge, but when humidity is a significant issue, it can be even more difficult. Ask any HVAC contractor, and they’ll tell you that humidity should be between 30% and 50%. If it’s too high, not only will it feel uncomfortable, but it can also cause moisture-related structural damage, like mold and rot. Thankfully, there are a few low-cost ways to minimize the humidity levels. To quickly improve the atmosphere of your home, try the following tasks.

How to Reduce Humidity in Your Home

1. Prioritize Ventilation

Any time you’re cooking something on the stovetop or in the oven, turn on the exhaust fan. Heating up any food adds moisture or steam to the room. The same applies to the bathroom, especially if you’re taking a shower.

If you don’t have exhaust fans in either room, you will need to have an HVAC contractor install them; they’re necessary in these areas. In other rooms, if there’s a breeze outside, crack open the windows and use the ceiling fan to circulate the air.

2. Rethink Your Plant Collection

If you love plants, don’t worry; you don’t have to get rid of your collection. Just move them outside, or at least separate them so they aren’t bunched up together.

3. Wipe Up Spills & Drips ASAP

Finally, the simplest task you can do is dry off any wet surfaces. Whether you’re doing the dishes or washing your face, get in the habit of wiping down the counters afterward. Don’t forget about the floor, either! Any puddles will eventually evaporate and add to the overall humidity in the room.
