The structural stability of steel lends itself to a wide range of construction projects that require a metal beam. Ensure the success of your project and gain a working idea of what your construction plans require by learning about the types of beams used in various projects, including bridges, skyscrapers, and residences.

4 Different Types Of Steel Beams

1. I-Beam

Shaped like a capital letter “I” that gives them their name, these beams feature either wide or tapered flanges—the horizontal top and bottom pieces of the beam. Cross-section versions come in S-sections that feature sloped edges on their interior flanges or W-sections, where the parallel flange surfaces are wide and flat. I-beams offer the strength needed for projects such as elevator, truck bed, and trolley way construction.

2. H-Beam

steelH-beams feature an H-shaped cross-section without slopes. They include long flanges and are among the heavier steel beam options available. H-beams are longer than I-beams and provide durable, powerful structural support for bridges and large commercial buildings.

3. W-Beam

W-beams feature wide, straight flanges, and can come in H- and I-beam format. These steel beams feature cross-sections that do not work well in terms of twisting loads or torsion accommodations.

However, their rivet, weld, and bolt applications make them ideal for residential projects. They offer both horizontal and vertical support solutions.

4. Channel

These beams feature C-shaped cross-sections and are also known as parallel flange channels. They include sloped inner flanges on their tops and bottoms that protrude in only one direction. Since their bending axis is not centered on the flanges, channels should not support heavy structural materials. These beams offer twisting capabilities and low torsion resistance and are perfect for supporting lighter structural loads.
