If your current cooling system is approaching the end of its life, invest in a new one before the appliance finally breaks. A new unit will ensure your family remains comfortable during the hottest months of the year and keep utility costs low. Many homeowners opt for a central air conditioning system or ductless unit. Here’s a closer look at these popular options.

Central Air Conditioning

If the existing ductwork in your home is in good condition, opt for a central air conditioning system. These ducts run throughout the house and connect to a large air handler that’s typically located in the attic. This cooling system features at least one wall-mounted thermostat to control operation.

The air is purified as it flows through filters, then it’s chilled with refrigerant and pushed back into the house through air-supply ducts. The system will power off when the thermostat senses the interior climate has reached the temperature setting.

Ductless

Instead of using a network of ducts and having one large air handler in the attic, ductless units feature individual air handlers stationed in different rooms. The indoor units are mounted on a wall and connected to one outdoor compressor via conduits. A conduit is inserted through a small hole drilled in the wall. The channel contains electrical wiring and refrigerant lines. Since a ductless system has multiple air handlers, you can customize temperatures in each room or zone of the house to reduce energy waste.
