When your auto air conditioning isn’t working properly, it can make driving even short distances hot and uncomfortable. Although a lack of cold air coming from the vents is the most surefire sign that the AC needs servicing, there are some other indications that you have a problem. Here are a few of them.

How to Know if You Need Auto Air Conditioning Services

1. Low Airflow

When the airflow coming from the vents in your car is weak, or there’s no airflow at all, something is preventing the cooled air from reaching them. This could be due to several problems, including mold or mildew buildup in the evaporator and a broken fan. It could also indicate leaks or broken seals in valves or hoses in the system.

2. Leaks Inside the Car

When the dashboard starts leaking, it’s often a sign that your auto air conditioning needs repair. The first indication of a problem may be water stains on the floor.

A leak usually means that the hose that carries water to and from the air conditioner is clogged. This often comes with age, but excessive moisture in the system can also cause blockages.

3. Strange Smells

Sometimes, the cabin air filter needs to be cleaned or replaced. However, a musty or mildew scent can also mean that there's mold in the air vent or evaporator case, and it needs to be cleaned.

4. Unusual Noises

Whenever your car makes an unusual noise, bringing it in for repair is necessary. Sometimes, a problem with the auto air conditioner can sound like an issue elsewhere.

For example, a loose or damaged belt can cause a high-pitched squealing noise. Don’t ignore any sounds that appear when you run the air conditioning, including banging, clicking, whistling, or squealing.

5. Slow Cooling

If the AC takes forever to get cold, you might need more refrigerant, or there’s a leak that needs to be repaired. You might not notice this issue until you take a longer trip.

Many people brush off slow cooling when they typically take short rides, thinking that the AC just didn't have time to get cool. That’s not always the case, though, so it's worth having it looked at.
