Just like people, cats and dogs can experience dental health issues like cavities and gum disease. If not treated, such problems may result in permanent tooth loss. They can also lead to other health problems; for example, periodontal disease is associated with an increased risk of heart disease. Luckily, most oral health issues can be prevented with proactive pet dental care. Find out how to care for your cat or dog’s teeth and gums below.

How Often Should You Clean Your Pet’s Teeth?

The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends brushing your pet's teeth daily, if possible. Otherwise, brush at least several times per week. It should take 30 seconds to one minute.

The process includes scaling to remove dental plaque and tartar as well as polishing. Your veterinarian may also recommend dental X-rays to detect problems invisible to the naked eye, like infected tooth roots.

Pet Dental Care Tips

Purchase a pet-friendly toothpaste and a toothbrush, which is smaller and has softer bristles than a human toothbrush. First, introduce the animal to these devices.

Put a bit of toothpaste on your finger and let the cat or dog taste it. Reward them with a treat afterward. Then put a bit of toothpaste on the toothbrush, and repeat the process.

To get your cat or dog accustomed to physical contact in their mouth, use your fingers to massage their lips, teeth, and gums. When they seem comfortable with that, introduce the brush. Talk to your pet throughout the process and reward them afterward.
