Periodontal Disease, also known as Gum Disease, is a common oral health problem that often goes unnoticed. Many people focus on brushing their teeth and fighting cavities, forgetting to care for their gums. However, the stakes are high, as Periodontal Disease can lead to major issues, including tooth loss. By being on the lookout for early signs, you can visit a dentist for treatment before the problem gets too severe.

How to Tell if You Have Gum Disease

1. Bleeding Gums

Gingivitis, an early stage of Gum Disease, will cause your gums to become red, swollen, and inflamed. When brushing or flossing, you’ll notice pain, irritation, and bleeding. If you’re pregnant, pay extra attention to this issue. During pregnancy, blood flow increases to your gums, leading to swelling. Additionally, hormonal changes make it more difficult to fight off bacteria, leading to decay and a higher chance of developing periodontal disease.

2. Gum Recession

If the inflammation of Gingivitis is left untreated, it will cause the bone that supports the teeth to recede away from the irritation.  This is the beginning of Periodontal Disease.  As it progresses, you may notice that your teeth look longer than usual or you may develop visible spaces between your teeth and gums. When this process occurs, the natural pockets between the teeth and gums become larger, creating areas where bacteria thrive. If this goes untreated, the teeth’s supporting bone structure will become permanently damaged and may lead to tooth loss.

3. Sensitivity

dentistAs the gums recede, the the porous root surfaces will become exposed; this layer is one of the most sensitive parts of the teeth. If you notice pain when drinking cold or hot beverages, gum disease may be the cause. Eventually, bacteria can infiltrate the porous root surfaces, leading to even more discomfort from root decay or a periodontal abcess. Periodontal Disease can destroy the structures that support your teeth without causing much pain until the last stages.  If you wait until there is severe pain, it may be too late to save the affected teeth.  If caught early Gum Disease is easily treated and maintained.
