Of the various procedures and products available to improve the skin’s appearance, two of the most effective and popular are microdermabrasion and photofacials. Here is a guide to how these treatments work and how they can help you.

Microdermabrasion

Skin care professionals have offered microdermabrasion since the 1980s. During this process, an aesthetician or dermatologist uses tiny crystals and a vacuum to exfoliate the tissue of the top layer of skin. No anesthetic is needed for this safe and painless procedure.

The procedure removes dead and damaged cells, which can produce a dull or uneven appearance. It also stimulates the production of collagen, a building block of skin, nails, and hair.

With age, the body produces less and less collagen naturally. Stimulating its production with skin care treatments will help reduce signs of aging.

Microdermabrasion also promotes fibroblast production; these cells play a key role in tissue repair. Fibroblasts can reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks as well as even skin tone.

Microdermabrasion can treat various skin complaints as well, such as acne, sun spots, clogged pores, rosacea, and wrinkles.

Photofacial

microdermabrasion-kailua-kona-HIPhotofacials utilize a technology known as intense pulse light therapy (IPL). It’s a newer technique than microdermabrasion but has similar effects.

With a photofacial, a skin care professional uses a computer-controlled tube to transmit a non-laser, high-intensity, multi-wavelength beam to penetrate all layers of the skin, instead of only the top. The light targets problem areas. As the light turns to heat, it destroys the damaged cells.

Like microdermabrasion, photofacials can be used to treat issues such as stretch marks, rosacea, acne, and spider veins. Because IPL penetrates deeper, its effects can last longer compared to microdermabrasion.
