The timing belt rotates the cam and crankshaft of your engine in sync to ensure that each cylinder fires at the right time. While it’s made from high-quality rubber and a nylon blend to be exceptionally durable, it needs to be replaced by an auto maintenance specialist after being subjected to heavy wear and tear. Below are telltale indicators that it’s time for a new one.

When to Replace the Timing Belt

1. Engine Won’t Start

There are many reasons as to why an engine won’t turn over, including a failing timing belt. Even if you hear the starter motor engaging, the engine will not start because of the broken connection between the camshaft and crankshaft. It gets trickier when the timing belt breaks while the engine is running—it can damage the cylinder head valves, piston, crank bearings, or oil pump because of the chipped off parts of the camshaft.

2. Misfiring Engine

auto maintenanceYour engine will misfire when its cylinders close or open earlier than they should. Sometimes, this happens with a slipping timing belt, causing the cam and crankshaft to move out of sync. A misfiring engine needs immediate attention from auto maintenance technicians to prevent severe damage to the motor and its internal components.

3. Unusual Sounds

If you notice a clicking or ticking noise coming from your engine, that’s the sound of a struggling timing belt as it controls the movement of the crank and camshaft through a series of pulleys. It can also be an indication of reduced oil pressure, affecting the belt’s tensioner to keep it taut.

Pay attention to squealing sounds when braking, accelerating, and idling—these may be from a worn-out timing belt, so have them checked right away.

4. Oil Leaks

The timing belt has a cover to protect it against debris, dirt, and oil. Sometimes, engine oil gets onto the cover when it leaks out because of a faulty gasket. The lack of oil leads to poor lubrication, which causes overheating, wearing out the timing belt faster than usual. If you notice oil on the cover, have an auto maintenance specialist check your timing belt.
