Even if you’ve been seeing the same ophthalmologist for years, your annual eye exams may be different. This is because there are a host of vision tests that your eye doctor may perform depending on your needs or concerns. The guide below looks at some you might experience.

3 Common Vision Tests

1. Visual Acuity

If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you’re familiar with the visual acuity test. During this exam, the patient attempts to identify letters or shapes that get increasingly smaller. Each eye is tested individually to ensure the most accurate results because it’s not uncommon for the left eye’s corrective prescription to differ from that of the right eye.

2. Visual Field

The visual field test determines the extent of your peripheral vision, which is how far you can see out of the corner of your eyes when looking straight ahead.

This is called the confrontation exam. An automated test, which has the patient focus on a screen with lights blinking in the periphery, is also available.

3. Color Vision

Can you distinguish between all the colors of the spectrum? To confirm that you can, your eye doctor may show you several dot patterns that contain shapes, letters, or numbers. If you can identify the correct answers, you likely don’t have a color deficiency.
