As pandemic restrictions ease across Nebraska, many are wondering how restaurants will reopen alongside other businesses. Currently, establishments are able to remain open and welcome dine-in seating without putting public health at risk. However, in a continued effort to minimize COVID-19 infections, the food service industry is adopting CDC and Nebraska DHHS safety guidelines. If you’re uncertain about eating out at this time, here are a few ways that local restaurants are working to protect the health of both customers and employees.

5 Reasons Why It’s Safe for People to Dine-In at Restaurants

1. Employees Must Take Protective Measures

Employees are required to take additional steps to prevent the spread of germs. Any staff members who are at risk of exposure or are showing signs of COVID-19 are instructed to remain at home according to state guidelines. Workers are also trained and expected to wear protective face masks and gloves, as well as practice preventive hand-washing measures. If possible, employees should also refrain from performing multiple duties.

2. Social Distancing Is Practiced

To limit the number of people within an establishment, restaurants must not exceed 50% of their maximum occupancy rating. Additionally, these businesses are expected to take other measures to encourage social distancing in seating areas—such as by splitting up large groups, placing partitions between tables, and using markings on the floor to maintain appropriate distances.

3. Surfaces Are Regularly Disinfected

restaurantWhen a customer is finished using a table or touching something in the restaurant, employees are instructed to clean the surface with an EPA-approved disinfectant. High-touch surfaces—such as doorknobs and railings—must be disinfected once every four hours.

4. Self-Service Is Prohibited

Buffets and other self-serve resources—including soda machines and topping areas—are to remain closed. This measure helps maintain distancing recommendations, as well as prevents germs from traveling from customers to surfaces.

5. Takeout Options Are Available

If a diner is sick or at a higher risk of COVID-19 complications, they can still opt to order takeout meals. This alternative also helps reduce the risk of an infected person bringing germs into the restaurant.
