While summer brings fun and relaxation, it also brings intense storms that can wreak havoc on your trees if you don’t prepare them properly. Damaged trees can lead to collapses and, in some instances, severe property damage. Follow these three steps to steer clear of storm-damaged trees this season.

3 Tips for Preparing Your Trees for Summer Storms

1. Prune

Strong winds can snap a tree’s branches, especially if they’re already damaged, diseased, or dead. When pruning, look for branches that are brittle, barren, and riddled with cracked bark. Remove these vulnerable branches by pruning your trees before the storms hit. When all of a tree’s branches are strong and healthy, it’s more likely to resist storm damage.

It’s vital that you don’t prune any healthy branches. While some people think topping a tree (cutting large, healthy branches down to stubs) makes it more wind-resistant, it actually weakens the tree and increases the risk of damage and decay.

2. Mulch

If a tree’s roots don’t receive plenty of water and nutrients, they won’t be strong enough to withstand summer storms. Promote healthy, storm-ready roots by mulching your trees. The mulch will help water and nutrients drain through the soil to nourish the roots.

Apply no more than 2 to 4 inches of mulch (preferably organic), as excessive mulch can damage the root system. In addition, avoid piling the mulch against the trunk since doing so increases the risk of health problems, such as rot due to lack of sun exposure.

3. Inspect

While pruning and mulching your trees, keep an eye out for signs of severe damage in the trunks and bases, namely cracks, decay, hollow areas, fungi, and leaning. These issues should be fixed before a storm comes and makes them worse, or even kills your trees. Unless you have extensive tree care experience, these problems typically require professional help.
