Attending a wine tasting can be intimidating if you aren’t an avid alcohol connoisseur. Drinking wine is an art form for many, but there are luckily many simple tips you can use to familiarize yourself with different types. The following tips can ensure you get the most from a tasting experience or when drinking at a dinner party with friends.

How to Taste Wine

1. Inspect the Wine First

Your first instinct may be to sip, but it’s important to inspect the wine first. Tilt the glass at a 45-degree angle and roll the wine toward the edge. Notice the color range and how dense the color is. This will help you determine what type of wine you’re drinking. You can then look from the side and swirl the glass, noting the viscosity and how the wine runs off the side of the glass.

2. Inhale

wineNext, take a deep inhale of the wine. Hover your nose above the glass and take in short sniffs. Pay attention to the spices, fruits, herbs, and other distinct woodsy smells. If you can’t identify them at first, don’t worry. Training your nose to pick up individual scents can take time. Enjoy the scents, swish the wine again to stir it up, and then smell again.

3. Take Small Sips

Finally, take a small sip. Allow the wine to sit on your tongue and try breathing through the back of your nose. Pay attention to how sweet or sour it is and how dense it feels in your mouth. You can then try to pinpoint certain ingredients, or if you choose, simply enjoy the taste.

If you’re at a wine tasting, it’s appropriate, though not required, to spit the wine out into a spittoon. This can help guests stay sober and able to test more wines. If you’re drinking with friends at dinner, feel free to enjoy the different wines available. You can begin to figure out whether you like sweet or acidic wines, red or white, and the different body types.
