Pigs don’t have sweat glands, so they cannot cool their bodies down the same as humans. This can lead to heat stress and other health complications during the summer, and you should plan to keep them healthy. Below are several strategies that you can add to your summer farm preparation and livestock supplies checklist.

How to Keep Pigs Cool During Summer

1. Change Feeding

Pigs eat less during summer, so compensate by using a nutrient-dense feed. These products have a higher content of protein and vitamins, allowing pigs to receive the same amount of nutrients as they do during winter. Also, look for a low fiber and high-fat option at the livestock supplies store. Reducing fiber intake will help their bodies generate less heat during digestion.

2. Provide Shelter

Shady areas are an excellent way to escape the heat, so make sure your pigs have access to one. It can be an awning they can huddle under, or you could relocate their pen near tree cover. Also, try adding posts to each cover of their pen and tying a sheet overhead. Whichever you choose, you’ll help them avoid sunburn and stay cooler.

3. Keep the Pen Muddy

They’ll dig into the mud to settle in pools of cool water, and the dried dirt will protect their skin from the sun. Purchase a sprinkler from a livestock supplies store and set it to a timer. This will ensure the pen stays muddy all day.

4. Provide Water

Water is a must. It helps the body cool down, and your pigs will need plenty of it in summer to rehydrate. The average pig requires 1.5 gallons per day; however, breeding swine require 4 gallons, and gestating females require 6 gallons. Set up a trough for water, and check and refill it throughout the day.
