With summer here, you’ll likely be taking your pet out for some fun adventures. However, outside heat can be tough on your pet if the right precautions aren’t taken, which may lead to a trip to the animal hospital. Follow the tips below to keep your pet comfortable and happy all season long, whether you’re at home or playing in the park.

Pet Summer Safety Guide

1. Know the Signs of Overheating

Cats and dogs do not sweat like people do—they rely on panting or drinking cool water to moderate their internal temperature. Even if you are comfortable, they may be overheating. If you notice your pet showing any heat exhaustion symptoms, take them to the animal hospital immediately. These include panting heavily, thick drool, wobbly legs, vomiting, diarrhea, or bright red gums.

2. Stay Hydrated

3. Avoid Hot Pavement

Asphalt absorbs heat. In direct sunlight, it can become tens of degrees hotter than the outside temperature. Try to take your pet for walks in the morning or late evening to avoid the midday sun. In the afternoon, the pavement has been baking in the sun and can burn your pet’s paws. If you must be out at this time, stick to sidewalks or grass, or put protective booties on your pet.
