Known for their timeless appeal and durability, hardwood floors look beautiful in any home. While they are low-maintenance, they eventually need refinishing to restore the surface seal. Keep an eye out for the following signs that your flooring could benefit from this service.

When to Refinish Your Hardwood Floors

1. Moisture Absorption

After sealing, hardwood floors are capable of resisting some moisture. For example, if you spill a little water, it should bead up on the surface and give you some time to wipe it up.

However, over time, constant foot traffic wears down the sealant. If you notice any liquids penetrating the flooring immediately, it needs to be refinished and resealed to prevent warping and stains.

2. Scratches & Chips

Whatever the cause, if the scuffs are prevalent throughout the space, have the flooring refinished. Sanding and resealing smooth out the surface and make it look as if it were newly installed.

3. Fading

Over time, ultraviolet (UV) rays cause wood to look dull and faded. This is most common on flooring closest to the windows.

If you have area rugs or large furniture, fading may also be unevenly distributed, appearing when you move your belongings. Refinishing the hardwood and applying a new stain will even everything out.
