If you’re experiencing problems with your HVAC system, the air handlers could be incorrectly sized for the space. Inadequate sizing results in a range of issues when heating and cooling. If you notice the following signs, have a contractor check whether your units need replacement.

How to Know If an HVAC Unit Isn’t Right for Your Home

1. Uneven Temperatures

Ductless systems are typically used for zoned heating and cooling, with one air handler controlling one room. To control the temperatures of multiple areas in an open-plan home, you need large units.

When the systems are too small, they don’t provide even temperatures throughout the space, creating hot and cold spots.

2. Shorter Cycles HVAC

When your HVAC system is too large, you may notice the heating or cooling cycles run for shorter periods. This happens because the device heats or cools the area too quickly.

When properly sized, an air conditioner should operate for about 15 to 20 minutes.

3. High Utility Bills

If your system activates too frequently, you may notice an increase in your utility bills. An incorrect HVAC system has to work harder to achieve your desired temperature, consuming more energy.

Look at bills from before you installed the device to determine if there has been an increase in usage and costs.

4. Moisture Problems

When cycling properly, an AC blows hot air over the evaporator coils, minimizing condensation. If this vapor isn’t regularly removed because the device is short-cycling, your house won’t be dehumidified.

If you notice moisture buildups on walls and ceilings, the HVAC may be too large for the space. Replace the system to prevent mildew and mold growth.
