A sprained ankle is a common injury affecting the ligaments that connect your leg and foot. When you twist the ankle in an unusual way, it can tear or stretch those ligaments. These injuries can vary in severity, so you should always visit an urgent care clinic to see your doctor if you suspect you’ve sprained your ankle.

When to Go to Urgent Care for an Ankle Sprain

1. Pain

There are many nerve endings surrounding the ligaments in your ankle and injuring them can cause you lots of pain. In the case of a sprain, related pain often presents in the soft part of the ankle rather than on the bone itself, as this is where the ligaments are.

The pain can vary from sharp to dull throbbing. If the pain is sharp and directly on your bone, you may have sustained a fracture and should go to urgent care right away.

2. Swelling

Extend your legs to compare the affected ankle to your other foot. If it looks misshapen or larger than its opposite, you’ve likely sustained a sprain.

If left unattended, swelling can increase over time. To keep swelling at a minimum and reduce any pain, ice the area for 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off until you’re able to see your doctor. A nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), such as ibuprofen or Aspirin®, can also help.

3. Difficulty Walking

Tenderness and swelling in the ligament can make it too uncomfortable to walk. You may struggle to put weight, if any, on the affected ankle, or you may begin limping as you naturally try to keep the weight off your leg. This is a clear indication your should schedule an appointment with your doctor.
