Outdoor activities like hiking are a fun and memorable choice for family vacations, dates, and group activities. When you’re preparing for a hike and actually on the trail, there are a few basic rules to keep in mind. Learn what to do and what to avoid to stay safe and have a peaceful time in nature.

Do:

Research your trail.

When you’re choosing a destination for outdoor activities, look at the weather for the region so you know what to expect. Read up on the trails and choose one with a difficulty level that suits your group. You’ll also learn how long the trail is, so you can estimate how long it will take to hike. Finally, look up the local wildlife and any precautions you need to take.

Pack correctly.

For a simple hike on a short, easy trail, tennis shoes are generally good enough. For anything more strenuous, you should wear sturdy hiking boots that have already been broken in. Pack plenty of water for each person along with snacks or meals depending on the length of the hike. Also add sunscreen and bug repellent, a hat and sunglasses, and clothes suited to the weather.

Don’t:

Go alone.

outdoor activitiesHiking is a group activity. At minimum you should have a buddy with you in case of an injury or accident. If you’re doing this outdoor activity with children, there should be at least two adults in the group, and you may need more to keep young kids on track. When you’re on the trail, don’t split the group up or let anyone wander far off the path. A buddy system helps minimize the risk of anyone getting lost.

Disrupt the natural environment.

One of the major reasons to go on a hike in nature is to enjoy the scenery, so don’t spoil it for your group and others. Pack up everything you brought in, including trash. Don’t mark or deface the trail or any trail markers. Also, don’t interfere with the wildlife and local flora; aside from being bad for the plants and animals, there’s a risk of sickness or injury to you.
