With many people now working from home and students finishing up their semesters with virtual learning due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, having a reliable WiFi connection and a strong Internet setup is crucial. You may have noticed technology problems interfering with your productivity. Below are five challenges and what to do about them.

What Technology-Related Challenges Might You Face When Working From Home?

1. Slow Internet

Upgrading your WiFi connection with a better router is your first step to improving speeds. With more people working remotely and more people in your own home logging on at the same time for jobs and school, you may notice a sluggishness to your connectivity. One trick is to use a hotspot connection to relieve some of the connection pressure, and this is especially true for cell phones and tablets that are designed to function well on these networks. However, if that doesn’t work, you may need a stronger connection or a more powerful modem from your provider.

2. Dropped Signal

Make sure the router is not tucked away in a cabinet where the furniture’s material can block the signal. It can also overheat your equipment when there is no airflow. Try centralizing your router and adding extenders that boost the signal to every corner of your home.

3. Video Call Troubles

Many companies have resorted to video calls for meetings and for keeping employee morale up. You may notice that you are having trouble hearing or seeing everyone in your virtual meeting. Using earbuds or headphones will make it easier to hear and will also drown out any background noise. If your laptop’s camera is of low quality, you may opt for a webcam. However, improved quality may be as simple as adding better lighting in the room when chatting.

4. Buggy Devices

One of the largest culprits behind buggy laptops, tablets, and even routers is that they haven’t been updated. This equipment requires software updates that include resolving known issues and even improving speed. Check that each device is up to date and run any fixes that haven’t been installed.

5. Running Too Many Programs

While it may be tempting to stream video and music while you work, these services require bandwidth. The more bandwidth you are using, the slower your connection will be. If you need to take a break and want to watch a few episodes of a show, just make sure you aren’t running all your programs at once.
