Whether you plan on installing laminate, flagstone, or tile, a new flooring installation can update the look of the entire house. To ensure an efficient installation that stands the test of time, here are a few ways to prepare your home.

3 Tips for Flooring Installation Preparation

1. Set the Right Temperature

Different flooring materials have recommended temperature ranges for their installation. Often, this temperature will need to be maintained before and after the installation to help the flooring acclimate properly. Adjust your indoor thermostat based on the contractor’s recommendations before installation day to avoid future problems like uneven or bubbling flooring.

2. Move Furniture

flooring installationFurniture, appliances, and other items will need to be moved out of the room where new flooring will be installed. Disconnect all appliances before attempting to move them.

If left in place, these items will block the installers’ access, and moving them will delay the work. Move furniture to another room or a temporary storage unit as needed.

3. Clean the Subfloor

The subfloor should be thoroughly cleaned before installing the new flooring. Leaving dust, mildew, and other allergens in place can cause significant indoor air quality problems during installation. You also don’t want the new flooring to simply cover up cleanliness issues. An unpleasant smell will be much more difficult to address after the dirty surface has been covered by the new flooring.

Cleaning the subfloor will provide better installation results and improved indoor air quality.
