Lung cancer is not only the leading cause of cancer death, but it also accounts for one quarter of all such deaths. Fortunately, the prevalence of this deadly condition is falling since people are increasingly aware of the risk factors and can avoid them. If you stay away from these lifestyle- and environmental-based risk factors, you can significantly reduce the likelihood of developing cancer in your lungs.

Avoidable Lung Cancer Risk Factors

1. Smoking

Tobacco smoke is the leading risk factor, claiming approximately 90% of all deaths from the condition. The poison in cigarette smoke damages DNA, which creates the growth of a tumor. At the same time, it weakens the immune system, limiting the body’s ability to kill the cancerous cells. Both a personal smoking habit and regular exposure to secondhand smoke are risk factors.

2. Asbestos

Asbestos is a natural group of minerals made of bundles of fibers. Breathing in or swallowing those fibers irritates the lung cells and can eventually cause a cancer in the lung or the lining surrounding the lungs, called mesothelioma.

lung cancerAsbestos was used in insulation for buildings up until 1978, when it was banned. If your building was built before that time, have it checked for asbestos. Follow all safety protocol if you work in a high-risk environment, such as a mine, shipyard, or textile plant.

3. Radon

Radon is an invisible, odorless, and tasteless gas. It occurs naturally in the environment as uranium breaks down in soil and rocks. If the gas is released into your home, it can build up to dangerous levels, and breathing it may expose your lungs to radiation. Fortunately, installing radon detectors allows you to know immediately if your home reaches dangerous levels so that you can have the problem addressed.
