Switching to an electrical vehicle (EV) is an eco-friendly choice that cuts down on gas expenses and reduces carbon emissions. But to charge your new car, you’ll have to make a few adjustments to your home regarding electrical installations. Here’s a quick guide to updating your house for your EV.

A Brief Guide to Charging Your Electric Car at Home

Types of Chargers

There are multiple types of chargers you can use to charge your EV’s battery, the most common being Level 1 and Level 2 chargers. Level 1 chargers are included with a majority of EVs and feature a three-prong plug that you can simply insert into a regular 120-volt outlet. Unfortunately, they’re also the slowest chargers, as they take at least 8-12 hours to fully charge your car’s battery.

Level 1 chargers are suitable for hybrid vehicles or drivers who only travel short distances, but many EV owners prefer Level 2 chargers because they’re faster and more powerful. Level 2 chargers can reduce charging time down to three to six hours. They require a 240-volt circuit, the same used by a major electrical appliance such as a dryer or oven. Many modern houses have a 240-volt circuit, but your electrician can install one if not.

Preparing Your House for Charging

Electrical InstallationsBecause Level 1 chargers plug into a standard outlet, you won’t need new electrical installations for your home. All they require is their own dedicated branch circuit. Before using a Level 1 charger, ensure that the circuit doesn’t power any other appliances.

Along with a dedicated circuit, Level 2 units require special charging equipment that should be professionally installed by an electrician. Most modern homes are built with the capacity to supply the 240-volts required by a Level 2 charger. If your electrical panel is older, you may need to upgrade your home to avoid overloading the system and tripping your circuits.

Regardless of which charger you pick, you’ll want to hire an electrician to check your house’s wiring and electrical system. In addition to identifying faulty equipment that could compromise your safety, they’ll assess your home’s capacity and determine if your panel is sufficient.
