If you own a brick-and-mortar shop, its ambiance will have a major impact on every customer who walks through the door. When determining what kind of environment to create, don’t underestimate the power of background music, which can influence mood—and, subsequently, shopping behavior—in a major way.

How 3 Different Music Genres Influence Mood

1. Electronic Dance Music

Electronic Dance Music can incite feelings of euphoria in most people. As such, playing EDM in your shop to elevate mood can be useful; however, consider your customer base and brand identity first.

If you own an antique shop that caters primarily to older people, for example, your customers may not enjoy EDM. A trendy clothing store, on the other hand, might see a boost in sales by pumping out EDM because customers will keep shopping so they can revel in the positive vibes.

2. Rock Music

Despite its fast pace and loud instruments, rock music promotes relaxation. Even heavy metal, which is at the extreme end of the spectrum, can combat anger, relieve depression, and calm nerves. Much like EDM, though, consider your brand identity before blasting rock music in your shop. Consider playing it in your casual dining restaurant, bar, hair salon, or auto parts shop rather than at a bookstore, children’s clothing shop, or greenhouse.

3. Classical Music

background musicCharacterized by pleasing instrumental compositions without lyrics, classical music can impact mood in a major way. Tempo matters, however, as slower melodies have a soothing effect, while faster music can excite and motivate listeners. Both slow and fast tempos have shown to reduce blood pressure and heart rate, though, which means classical music, in general, can have a relaxing effect.

If neither EMD nor rock is appropriate for your shop, classical music may be the answer. Customers who are relaxed are more likely to take their time while browsing, and they’ll inevitably pick up more items to buy in the process.
