Teeth whitening is a quick, painless, and non-invasive procedure that further beautifies your smile. However, it causes inflammation of the teeth’s nerves. For a brief time, you’ll experience tingling and a sensitivity to cold air, food, and beverages. But, with simple dental care tips, you can treat sensitivity or even prevent it from occurring.

What Are Some Teeth Whitening Tips?

1. Brush Your Teeth

Brush your teeth before you whiten them. While brushing them after the procedure seems like a viable option to increase the whitening’s efficacy, it can lead to further sensitivity.

Dentin is a bony tissue beneath the enamel. When it’s exposed, its pores are highly sensitive. Brushing after whitening your teeth will open the pores and increase your sensitivity. It can also negatively affect the enamel because of the acidic properties of some bleaching agents.

Treat your teeth like any other body part after a procedure. Let them recover. Don’t brush for at least several hours. Before the process, purchase a soft-bristled brush, which is softer on your gums and teeth.

2. Use Pain Relievers

Dental CareOver-the-counter pain relievers can also help. Ibuprofen and naproxen are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). They can reduce nerve inflammation and discomfort experienced while drinking or eating. In some cases, taking these pain relievers before whitening your teeth will prevent any of these symptoms from occurring.

3. Add Fluoride

Fluoride should be a part of your daily dental care regimen. However, it also has benefits after a teeth whitening procedure. Fluoride rinses and toothpaste are known to alleviate symptoms.

4. Consult Your Dentist

Visit your dentist at least two weeks before your teeth whitening procedure. They’ll prescribe a desensitizing toothpaste or one with higher levels of fluoride that can’t be found in over-the-counter variants. Using them regularly before the procedure will minimize or prevent your symptoms.

If sensitivity and discomfort continue or get worse, reach out to your dentist. They can apply desensitizing products in-office to alleviate your symptoms.

However, the sensitivity and discomfort may not have been caused by the teeth whitening. During your visit, your dentist will check for cavities and gum recession, which will also cause these symptoms.
