Metal buildings are durable and energy-efficient, making them ideal for a variety of agricultural and industrial operations. Unfortunately, they’re also prone to rust, which can threaten their appearance and structural integrity. Rust-proof your metal building by following these three tips.

A Guide to Rust Prevention on a Metal Building

1. Use Galvanized Steel

Galvanized steel features a thin layer of zinc that protects metal from moisture and corrosion. Since moisture is the leading cause of rust, choose a pre-galvanized frame and base when designing a metal building.

Using this type of steel will decrease the amount of maintenance and repairs, saving you time and money. If you’ve already built the structure, swap the most exposed components for parts made of galvanized steel.

2. Paint or Finish It

metal buildingsRed primer is a popular choice when coating a metal building. And while it may conceal visible rust stains, it will not prevent it from growing and causing structural damage.

Instead, apply a brand of exterior paint with anti-corrosion elements. This paint will keep moisture away from the metal while enhancing your building's appearance. If you don't want to paint your building, apply an acrylic finish.

Follow these steps before painting or finishing your building:

  • Use vinegar and a steel brush to remove any existing rust and one with bleach to tackle and remove any mildew.
  • Power wash the structure to get rid of excess grease or dirt.
  • When it’s dry, wipe the structure down with a tack cloth. If chalk appears, use a steel brush to remove it and power wash the building again.
  • If you've decided to paint the building, apply an even coat of rust-inhibiting primer. Let it dry for two hours before layering a basecoat of acrylic primer. Finish by applying acrylic house paint. Wait two hours before applying each layer.
  •  If you’re not painting the building, add a metal-safe acrylic finish after the rust-inhibiting primer dries.

3. Prevent Inside Moisture

While using the correct materials and painting or finishing your building will protect the outside from moisture, you’ll also want to protect the inside. Regularly inspecting the building for leaks and promptly completing repairs will prevent excess moisture buildup inside your structure.

You should also ensure the building is properly insulated, as drastic temperature changes can lead to condensation and rust. Try insulating your metal building or roof with foam boards or closed-cell foam insulation spray.
