If your tooth has been damaged by decay or injury, a root canal can preserve it. While these procedures are very commonplace, many people still experience anxiety as soon as their dentist recommends it. To alleviate stress and worries, here is what to expect when undergoing a root canal.

A Guide to Root Canals

Why is this procedure performed?

While tooth enamel is an extremely hard substance, it’s not completely impervious to damage. Damage can be caused by decay, wherein bacteria infiltrate tiny cracks in the tooth and gradually eat away at the enamel.

Enamel can also be compromised for other reasons, such as a sports injury or car accident. In both cases, a root canal fortifies the tooth and seals it to prevent bacteria from getting in.

What happens during a root canal?

There are several steps to a root canal, so the procedure usually takes more than one appointment. Local anesthesia is used to numb the mouth and ensure the patient is comfortable. Next, the dentist drills a hole into the tooth to access the damaged tissue. The tissue is carefully removed and the inner recess of the tooth is polished and smoothed. The dentist fills this area with a rubber material, which keeps the tooth sturdy.

Do root canals hurt?

While these procedures have a painful reputation, they’re really no more uncomfortable than having a tooth filled. Your dentist will use a sedation method—they usually inject a sedative directly into the gum near the affected tooth—to reduce discomfort and pain.

What happens after the procedure?

Most people are able to resume normal activities after their root canals, but you should still exercise caution when it comes to eating. Your mouth will be numb for up to four hours afterward, so it’s best to refrain from eating until the numbness has completely worn off.

At that point, be careful about what you eat. Soft foods, like mashed potatoes, rice, and yogurt, are best in the hours immediately after your surgery. Foods should also be eaten at room temperature, as extremely hot or cold foods can increase sensitivity after a root canal.
