Even the best professional audio equipment can have issues from time to time. For instance, microphones can be prone to static-ridden feedback, or will sometimes produce no sound at all. If your wireless mic is having one of these problems, here’s what you should know about troubleshooting it.

3 Common Issues With Wireless Mics

1. Distortion

If the devices within your wireless mic system are not on the same frequency, you may hear audible distortion. Intermodulation distortion, or IMD, occurs when two or more signals pass through a diode or amplifier. However, if either the diode or amp’s frequencies are too close to the ones used by the system, the microphone will not produce the crystal clear sound that it should.

Thankfully, resolving the problem is easy. Simply coordinate all the devices within the system onto the same frequency through the soundboard. If the issue keeps happening, there are various software tools you can use to determine “IMD-free” frequencies given the circumstances.

2. Interference

Other electronics in the area, including cellphones and poorly connected sound pedals, could also be contributing to the problem. Turn off or move any devices that are within 5 feet of the receiver. If that doesn’t eliminate the static, you can use a frequency spectrum analyzer to pinpoint the source of the local interference on site.

3. Silence

If your wireless mic isn’t working at all, check the batteries. However, if they don’t need to be charged or replaced, inspect the audio interconnect cables. Frayed wires or loose connections could prevent the mic from working. Finally, confirm that the receiver and antennas were installed properly by ensuring they’re not loosely connected and that there’s a clear line of sight from them to the microphone’s transmitter.
