Spiders are common everywhere, but they're especially attracted to warm areas with many hiding places and access to bugs. This can make your house an attractive place to spin a web. If you see spiders in your home, pay attention. By learning more about which kinds are poisonous, you can work with a pest control service to get rid of them. Here's what you should know.

A Guide to Spiders You May See in Your Home

1. Black Widow

These are one of the two types of poisonous spiders common in Alabama. They're distinctive, with bulbous black bodies that are shiny rather than hairy. Females have a bright red hourglass marking on their belly. A black widow bite can cause muscle pain, nausea, and sometimes difficulty breathing. Some people are more sensitive to the bites than others, but most bites aren't fatal.

2. Brown Recluse

It has a fiddle-shaped marking on its back toward the front of its body, which is its most distinctive feature. It also has velvety hair and long, thin legs for its body size.

A brown recluse bite is more dangerous than a black widow bite. Severe reactions can be deadly, but even a mild reaction leaves a wound that grows over time and can become infected.

3. Yellow Sac Spider

Yellow sac spiders are sometimes mistaken for brown recluses because they are also small and brownish in color. However, their coloring is much more yellow than a brown recluse, and they don't have the violin-shaped marking. Yellow sac spiders aren't dangerous to humans.

4. Grass & House Spiders

These common spiders are also occasionally mistaken for brown recluses. There are many varieties, some of which have markings or patterns. These markings appear on the spider's large abdomen near the back of the body—not on their backs near the front of the body, where the legs attach.
