Whether you have a long commute or only drive on the weekends, car dents are inevitable. Even the most careful driver gets them! However, that doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do to minimize the damage. Certain situations are more likely to lead to dents than others. If you want to reduce the chances of getting them, here’s what you need to know.

Common Reasons for Car Dents

1. Tight Parking Spaces

When someone tries to park in a spot intended for smaller vehicles, it poses a problem for the person parking next to them. The force of just opening the door can create a significant dent in both cars. So, if you see an SUV in a spot meant for a sedan, don’t be tempted to take the space next to it, if possible. Likewise, try not to squeeze your car in small parking spaces.

2. Shopping Carts

If you’re parking at a grocery store or shopping center and see abandoned carts nearby, take as many as you can and put them in the corral. It only takes a breeze to get them rolling! Even if the trajectory to your vehicle is unlikely, you’ll be helping someone else avoid the stress of getting a car dent.

3. Hailstones

Ranging from about a quarter of an inch to six inches in size, this solid form of precipitation occurs across the country. Depending on their size and weight, they can do a number on the surface of your car. Although you can’t avoid them entirely, keeping a close eye on the weather reports will give you an idea of when to strategically try avoiding them. If possible, park your car in a garage or carport when hail is possible.
