Different Types of Grease Traps

Gravity

In gravity traps, pieces of debris naturally float to the top of the tank, while heavier solids and food particles float to the bottom. As water flows out, other substances remain in the tank.

Automatic

While gravity traps are a passive system, automatic traps actively skim materials from the top of the water and store it in a separate container.

Hydromechanical

Gravity traps are often buried underground due to their large size. Automatic traps can also be buried, or they can be installed at the base of the sink. Hydromechanical traps are much smaller and only ever found at the base of sinks and other plumbing fixtures.

What to Consider When Making a Selection

Different grease traps and interceptors require different levels of maintenance. Gravity traps require grease trap service every 90 days to pump the oil and solids from the tank. If these substances make up 25% or more of the tank capacity, pumping must be scheduled sooner. While automatic traps have a higher upfront cost, they’re less costly from a maintenance perspective.

The size of your restaurant is another aspect to consider. A gravity trap can have a capacity of 500 gallons or greater, which is ideal for larger dining establishments with a steady flow of customers. However, if you own a small cafe and have a smaller customer base, a hydromechanical trap may be the best option.
