Some patients interested in breast augmentation may have concerns about their ability to breastfeed if they have children in the future. Luckily, most patients can still successfully breastfeed after the procedure. However, some factors may have an impact, so your cosmetic surgeon will likely want to discuss these issues with you before performing the surgery.

Why a Cosmetic Surgeon Should Know If You Plan to Breastfeed After a Breast Augmentation

1. A Special Incision May Be Used

To accommodate future breastfeeding, the surgeon may opt for an incision under the fold of the breast or near the armpit, rather than around the areola. This type of incision lowers the chance of damaging the milk duct or the nerves around the nipple that impact the breast’s ability to push out milk.

2. Placement May Impact the Milk Ducts

breast augmentationImplants are often placed over the pectoral muscle to provide a realistic look. This normally isn’t a problem for those who want to breastfeed, but there is a small chance of this placement blocking or disrupting the milk ducts. Your surgeon may recommend altering the placement of the implant slightly, so this area is not blocked.

3. There Are Slight Risks

Any surgical procedure in the chest area has a small chance of impacting the patient’s ability to breastfeed. However, even ruptured implants have not been proven to impact the health of a breastfeeding baby. Certain types of implants, like gummy bear implants, have a lower chance of rupturing than others, so discuss this option with your surgeon beforehand.
