An impeller is a crucial component of any industrial water pump. It is a rotating mechanism that uses centrifugal force to transfer energy from the pump motor to the water being pumped, speeding up the water from the center of rotation outward. Below, learn about three types of impellers and the critical role they play in water pump function.

What Are Some Commonly Used Impellers?

1. Open

An open impeller has vanes affixed to a central hub, which is mounted onto a shaft. The vanes of the impeller are not surrounded by walls or enclosures, making them easy to access for cleaning, repair, and maintenance. However, because the vanes are exposed, they do not have support along the sides, making them better suited to smaller water pumps that do not require large amounts of power or volume.

2. Closed

This design offers a great amount of strength and dependability as water moves through the conduits between the impeller and the plates, resulting in a more efficient flow. Closed impellers can have either single or double inlets, and they are primarily used for clear liquids like water. However, the enclosed design makes it easier for solid materials to clog this type of impeller.

3. Semi-Open

A semi-open impeller has only a backplate supporting the vanes. This leaves the opposite side of the impeller exposed to the water pump interior. The clearance between the vanes and the pump housing must be minimal because if it's too wide the liquid can easily recirculate. Semi-open designs are best at handling more viscous fluids, including oils, as well as liquids with a modest amount of suspended bodies.
